Phil, a hardy Belgian man in his mid-fifties, lives and works in Northern Scotland, on the most remote island of the Outer Hebrides, the Isle of Lewis. One night, he has a stroke and loses his memory.

Millie, also in her mid-fifties, a member of the Presbyterian community on the island for whom Phil works, is responsible for caring for him. She ends up admitting to Phil that they used to be secret lovers. Rekindling their old passion, Phil and Millie secretly become lovers again. While Phil happily rediscovers their love story and gets back to his normal life as a farmhand, Millie begins to dread the moment when Phil will regain his memory and find out that she lied to him.
